How to find your personal style

I used to work as a personal fashion stylist and shopping agent. It was a lot of fun; most of my clients couldn’t choose their own clothes, so, they just wore the clothes I chose for them.

Even if they wore clothes from top brands, they still didn’t feel confident about their appearance, and even if they did a color coordination diagnosis and knew what colors looked good on them, they still didn’t feel confident.

From such an experience, I thought, “You should wear clothes the way you like, if you like wearing them.”

In this way, you will be able to find your own fashion style.

So, let me share with you my opinion on how to find your personal style.

Trust your instincts.

“In my case, I worked as a clothes salesman for a long time, so I bought a lot of clothes at the same time.

Or rather, I had to buy them, because I had to wear them and feel something for myself, and then I had to tell the customers about it. I spent a lot of money and sometimes it was a waste. In the end, the experience probably established my own style.

However, this is just my own experience. Times are different now. Nowadays, you can’t just buy a lot of clothes and find your own style. To give a good example, I had a friend who was a professional drummer and painter – they already had their own style. I admired them for that because they were just doing what they liked. They don’t have much knowledge on fashion brands and such but because they wore what they wanted to and were confident doing it, they were able to create their own style.”

Don’t follow fashion trends

Even if you see this year’s trendy outfits, bags, and shoes on sale at the store, before you buy them, consider thinking, “do I really like this?”- if you like it, go ahead and buy it!

However, if you buy them even though you don’t like them, and just because all your friends have them, or because you are worried that you might miss out on the latest fashion trends, you will never be able to establish your personal fashion style.

Even if your family and close friends criticize your clothes and the items you choose, it’s okay if you like it. Wear what you like, as you like it, because that is your style.

Conscious shopping (avoiding wasteful consumption)

It’s good to feel free to wear the items you like because you already have your own fashion style. However, don’t just buy anything using your intuition you must have your wardrobe memorized in your mind when you go shopping. You need to think about when you’ll  wear something and how you can combine it with what you already have.

This is my personal opinion, but people who have their own style use things for a long time and know how to take care of them. In other words, you don’t need to have a lot of clothes.

Finally, let me share with you the words of a man who has been running a store for over 40 years in Harajuku, Tokyo, the fashion capital of Japan.

You can buy clothes by paying for them, but you can’t buy style. Because it is the style that ages with the clothes

So, let me know what you think about this. I appreciate you taking the time out to read this blog.
